You’ll need to gather 30 Val'anyr fragments, which can drop from any boss in Ulduar, except Algalon the Observer. Certain bosses with a hard mode also offer a chance to get an additional fragment from their hard-mode loot chest. Yogg-Saron, the final boss, will always drop one fragment.

Step 2: Assemble the Shattered Fragments and Begin the Quest

Once you have 30 fragments, combine them to create the Shattered Fragments of Val'anyr and begin the quest "Ancient History."

1. Use the Ulduar Teleporter to reach the Antechamber.

2. Head towards the Archive Console located near the Iron Council, turn in Ancient History, and then start the follow-up quest, "Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings."

To proceed, you need to complete the quest objective, which involves engaging Yogg-Saron in hard mode. This means fighting Yogg-Saron without the aid of any Ulduar Keepers. Ulduar only has two difficulty levels—Normal and Timewalking—so you’ll need to avoid speaking with the Keepers before facing Yogg-Saron.

Note: Avoid talking to the Keepers at all, even during the fragment-collecting stage, to ensure you can complete the quest later.

Step 3: Use the Shattered Fragments During Yogg-Saron’s Deafening Roar

During the third phase of the Yogg-Saron fight (after defeating his brain inside the portal), use the Shattered Fragments of Val'anyr on him while he casts Deafening Roar.

Key points to keep in mind during this step:

• Avoid facing Yogg-Saron when he uses Lunatic Gaze, which drains sanity.

• Yogg-Saron will summon numerous adds, so be careful not to use excessive AoE attacks.

• Stand close to Yogg-Saron and keep him as your target, as the Shattered Fragments of Val'anyr have a short cast range.

• If you miss using the fragments during a Deafening Roar, wait for the next one to try again.

How to Tell If the Fragments Worked

Once the fragments have successfully hit Yogg-Saron, he will display a buff. Defeat Yogg-Saron while he still has this buff, and you’ll be able to loot the Reforged Hammer of Ancient Kings from his chest.
