Stat Priorities: Versatility > Crit > Haste (Mastery offers no benefits)

Although the green stats conversion for Versatility isn’t as high as for Crit, Versatility provides survival benefits, which are crucial for Dragon Overlords. Thus, Versatility is prioritized over Crit.

While Haste has a high conversion rate, it needs a certain amount of time to cast an extra ability for noticeable benefits. However, Dragon Overlords only need one “Crane Kick” to kill most mobs and about five to six strikes for bosses. Haste often offers less tangible benefits, making Crit and Versatility preferable.

Recommended Gear and How to Obtain It

Weapon:

This patch’s timewalking dungeons are the biggest winners for weapons. The best options are the Stone Flower Staff from Dire Maul East and the Emberstone Staff from Deadmines. Other item level 56 weapons are fine as transitional options. Use the Lifesteal enchant for better solo performance. In future TBC timewalking content, a staff with a single Crit stat from Mana-Tombs will be an option.

Head:

The ideal headgear is dropped by Anomalus in The Nexus, with default sockets and potential extra stats like Haste, Leech, Dodge, or Indestructible. Set your loot spec to Brewmaster or Windwalker to increase the drop rate. The best gem for Crit, High Energy Oscillator Diamond, requires Apexis Shards from Blade’s Edge Mountains. If unavailable, a three-socket head from a Zangarmarsh questline (from Telredor for Alliance and Cenarion Refuge for both factions) works as a replacement.

Neck:

Necklaces with three sockets can drop from rare and dungeon bosses in the Dragon Isles, or players can use socket tools purchased from the auction house to add sockets. If the best necklace isn’t available, the third boss in Brackenhide Hollow drops a decent option.

Shoulders:

For shoulders, use cloth shoulders combined with cloth gloves for set bonuses; best ones drop from the final boss in Slave Pens. Note that Classic Loot mode may be required, necessitating help from a higher-level player. If you prioritize survival over DPS, timewalking shoulders also work as transitional gear.

Gloves:

These should also be cloth, ideally Mana-Etched Gloves from The Blood Furnace’s second boss, which work with the cloth shoulders to complete a powerful set. The combined bonus of Crit and Intellect makes this set preferable for overall strength.

Chest:

Best-in-slot is dropped by the third boss in Underbog and grants 4 Versatility. Timewalking chest gear is fine as a temporary replacement.

Legs:

The best pants, Moonchild’s Legguards, drop from the second boss in The Blood Furnace. Timewalking pants are suitable as a transition option while farming these.

Belt:

The top belt drops from the third boss in The Blood Furnace, offering two base sockets with a chance for a third. Again, Classic Loot mode may be required. Use timewalking gear as a placeholder while waiting for this belt.

Boots:

The best boots come from a quest reward in Zangarmarsh, which offers rare (blue) or epic (purple) upgrades. Horde can start the quest in Swamprat Post, while Alliance can start in Orebor Harborage. Alternatively, Sea Breeze Shoes, dropped by the water elemental in Dire Maul’s west wing, are excellent alternatives.

Cloak:

The best cape is one with sockets. You can farm these from rares in the BFA and Draenor zones, with specific options like the Scale-Adaptive Cloak and Timid Rider’s Cape. BoE socketed cloaks from Broken Isles rares are also options, with versatility as the top choice.

Bracers:

Ideal bracers are socketed, which can drop from the second boss in Atal’Dazar or the classic Ragefire Chasm dungeon. Timewalking bracers are the best transitional gear until a socketed pair drops.

Ring:

The top rings are crafted Crit/Vers rings from Mechagon, with higher item levels unlocked through Reputation with Rustbolt. However, rings from the Hallow’s End event are decent substitutes if socketed and more cost-effective than non-socketed Mechagon rings.
